Student Perspectives on Open Distance Education Via Online Learning: Challenges, Motivations, and Opportunities in the Indian Context

ABSTRACT:

Problems of funding, income sources, lack of information and quality of vocational education plague the Indian higher education system, as it plagues most developing countries, where public education and government support are not available. Education expansion and reduction in tuition fees are the main reasons in those districts and occupations. Nationwide Open Universities are playing a critical part in finding a solution in a developing nation like India. But many universities running on open distance learning model still prefer to give education based on paper / correspondence model. It observes that the correspondence model leads to significant attrition rates. A review of the related literature identified challenges to the successful adoption of online learning, such as, lack of online learning facilities and infrastructure such as computers, laptops, mobiles, etc., as well as management and maintenance issues, lack of resources for students to receive learning, and Lack of high-speed internet required for teaching, lack of experienced and trained teachers to impart education, etc. This is a research paper that initiates the introduction of online learning in Open Distance Education and providing efficient education. Also, by promoting online learning in the areas of future research, students and teachers should be promoted through an open distance education system of digital devices like Computers, Mobile Phones and Laptops.

INTRODUCTION:

In order to address the issue of students' lack of access to technical and higher education, the National Open University has long been viewed as the solution. It is also viewed as a solution to the issue of underprivileged and weak students, as a result of which all students can readily finish their education, land positions in reputable companies, and contribute significantly to the advancement of the nation. are capable of carrying out the collaboration. For a very long time, online and open education has been successful. In this case, the students receive study resources in the form of the books and papers they need to prepare for their exams. Due to advancements in electronic media such as radio, television, and other forms of communication, Open Distance Education is now able to provide blind students with an education by means of pre-recorded study material on video cassettes that they can read in a few subjects. They contribute significantly to society and receive aid.

 

For blind students in India, there is already recorded video course material available. In other cases, All India Radio transmitted courses over the radio through "Radio Aksha" and many other programmes, making educational content accessible. All of these are now part of Open Distance Education, a digital resource used to support online learning.

Through this study paper, learning and development of online teaching have been driven in order to achieve educational goals, which include developing online and new technologies in order to provide digital learning resources outside of the textbook education provided in schools. The usage of tax. The education given to pupils online is proving to be more successful by transforming the written study material into online content using laptops and computers.

 

"A university with an open-door academic policy and no minimum entrance criteria" is how Wikipedia defines an open university (Wikipedia, 2017). These open universities are different from traditional universities in that there are no contracts between students and instructors, unlike in schools and colleges, even though this relationship may not always be clear-cut. Historically, both kinds of schools have catered to working students who are less capable and have released the necessary content for pupils to learn in blocks.

 

Known as an Open and Distance Education University, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is the largest university in India in terms of student enrollment and educational access. It is located in several Indian states, including Delhi. Similar to this, Delhi University launched Open Distance Education in the middle of 1962, and more than 35 universities and other educational institutions currently use Open Distance Education to teach their students. For students who lack the resources or time to attend classes in person, open distance learning provides the instruction that is today's equivalent of nectar. The primary advantage of open distance learning is that instructors can instruct students directly without being limited by the availability of classroom space at schools and other higher education establishments. For those who wish to combine work and school, it is accessible due to its low admission requirements and lack of working fees.

 

The University of London's Outreach Program, the first university in the world to provide online courses through Open Distance Education, is where the idea for education via distance learning initially emerged. In India, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Center for Open Learning (SOL) in Delhi University and many other educational institutions still use the traditional paper (book) based education system where subject related learning material is available to prospective students and course takers. It is provided to the people. Due to which the absenteeism of the students due to paucity of time has reduced the high pass rate obtained by the students. Greater online and technology use in conjunction with legacy systems will develop student learning motivation and the implementation of a hands-on learning experience in students will lead to higher completion rates and student retention.

 

The goal of this research paper is to improve the quality of education and the educational experience for the student in the education provided through open distance learning, with a focus on business-based education that should be more fulfilling for the resolution of business and income-related issues for students, in order to increase student competition and retention rates. The aim of this research paper is to study the challenges of online education as well as to see how online learning can be incorporated in various forms by the open distance education model run by many universities in India.

 

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

It is hoped that the following research issues will be addressed by this study.

1.      What problems face India's current system of online education?

2.      What are the benefits of both online and digital education?

3.      What direction is digital education moving towards in addition to online education?

 

RELATED LITERATURE:

Eduke (2008) found in one of his research projects that ICT in teaching was relevant as an assessment tool, whereas the current teachers are dependent on books, divide, colored chalk, lack of funds for education, problems of management of educational resources, etc. He used to be very busy due to which he used to see ICT as a profession. These issues are relevant today and will continue to be so if attention is not paid to them. Inadequate internet connection is still a hindrance to effective online education in various regions of India, without this the transition from a paper-based distance education system to an online education based one will never be done.

 

The purpose of Rahman M, Holadar F, and Khan A's (2012) study was to identify the obstacles to a competency-based training program's implementation in Bangladeshi TVET institutions. According to their research, in order for computer-based training to be effective in the classroom, the government must both prepare teachers and give the necessary funding. Raising public awareness is necessary to address the issue that participants in competency-based training programs face, as well as to alter the mindset of educators. Regular job fairs, connections between industry and TVET institutions, and the need to expand employment resources for schools and institutes are also necessary.

J. Marques (2013) asserts that because technology advancement and the process of learning something new have always been intimately linked, online education evolved as a distinct educational revolution from earlier ones. such include developing print and electronic technologies, acquiring new technologies, developing vocational education, and learning to read and write.

 

According to L. Allison (2013), Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) is one of the many online education system platforms. MOOC aims to provide open and innovative learning through mass participation and advanced learning by connecting a greater number of students in one place through Internet. MOOC differs from online courses and open education resources in that it opens opportunities for learners to participate in learning activities using openly available resources rather than books by providing new resources or courses.

 

According to K. Abhijit (2014), the term online education was first used during the CBT System Seminar in Los Angeles in October 1999, at that time the term 'Online - Education' was used by a professional for the first time to describe a new the word was used. Associated with such expressions as online learning or virtual learning by online education, the term refers to online, interactive and sometimes allowing access to a way to learn something new based on the use of personal training. Interactive TV, CD-ROM etc. to develop competencies with the help of online education, while the learning process is independent of time and place.

 

Online Education Technology and Sustainable Development:

In addition to several hurdles, sustainable development also faces a wide range of complex issues. Campaigns and initiatives to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, which were adopted in 2015, are included. The 17 goals of sustainable development include gender equality (no discrimination between boys and girls), access to clean water and sanitation for all, zero poverty, zero hunger, decent health and well-being for all, and quality education for all. Economic growth, industry expansion, the promotion of innovation and infrastructure, the reduction of inequality, the resolving of rural and urban issues, the promotion of rural and urban synergy, etc. all contribute to the availability of affordable and clean energy, decent work and decent income for all, and these factors are all accompanied by economic growth. By ensuring food security and increased agricultural production, constructing hospitals, connecting cities and villages, and implementing a number of programmes to expand access to high-quality healthcare, we will be able to eradicate poverty and hunger. People's health can be improved through online education, which would then improve society's health and well-being. Through online learning, a large population can acquire medium skills for less money and in a lot less time while still receiving a high-quality education. If skill development programmes are implemented on a big scale through online mediums, making people independent and skilled, good work can be supplied to them, increasing people's sources of income.

 

Basic Reasons for Online Learning:

There are some inherent advantages to teaching online learning that cannot be utilised in traditional classroom settings, some of which include:

 

Exploring on Your Own Duration Applying Your Skills and Own Technology:

Online learners have the freedom to choose how, when, and how much they want to learn by using their own equipment and devices. They can choose the time of day that works best for them to receive the instruction. They are also capable of learning and skilled at doing so. These are grin-inducing benefits that are not provided for instruction that is given in a classroom.

 

Accessing The Course Material as Per Your Requirement:

Students can start learning from anywhere they choose because small groups of students receive the study materials for online courses. This is in contrast to the traditional educational system, whose curricula force the child to wait until first grade to receive an education. The similar problem arises for students enrolled in courses that use learning management systems.

 

Self-Assessment:

Online education uses a multiple-choice testing and evaluation approach that enables the student to instantly assess their knowledge of the topic by selecting the appropriate response from a list of options. how well he comprehends the subject. It is quite beneficial in assisting the pupil in measuring their own evaluation.

 

Training in a Secure Environment with Simulation:

Online education replaces the choice of hands-on learning courses with safe simulations that may be used as many times as needed by the student, saving money and eliminating the requirement for laboratory experiments. Online education, in contrast, can provide students greater outcomes.

 

Enhanced Access to Learners:

The increase in student earnings brought about by online education has motivated students to pursue higher education. This is mainly because students who study online have the option to work part-time jobs that pay their bills. The number of students who can enroll in a particular online course is theoretically unlimited.

 

Low-Cost Education:

While compared to traditional classroom learning, online education is less expensive. This is mostly because there are no further fees for teachers, hostels, libraries, school development, etc. for students to pay when enrolling in online courses after paying their initial educational expenditures.

 

Research Questions Answered:

As can be seen from this research study, the challenges of online education can be considered as follows:

·        Lack of facilities and basic technology required for online education.

·        Lack of access to proper material by the students.

·        Lack of high-speed internet to aid online education.

·        Lack of trained teachers to provide online education to students.

 

Open Distance Learning Via Online Education and its Significance:

Open Distance learning via online education refers to methods that liberate students from geographical and temporal limitations and open up access to education and training. It provides both individual and group learners with customizable learning options. This area of education is expanding the quickest. The growth of Internet-based technologies, notably the World Wide Web, has emphasised the potential impact of open distance learning on many facets of education. It can be characterised as instruction involving the use of applications for information, computing, and communications technology in several locations (Webster and Hackley, 1997, p. 1284).

 

The fundamental definition of distance learning via online education takes into account the spatial separation between the teacher and the pupils, and how this distance is filled via the use of technical resources (Casarotti, Filliponi, Pieti, and Sartori, 2002, p. 37). A driving force behind social and economic progress is distance learning. In both rich and emerging nations, it is quickly becoming a fundamental component of the mainstream of educational institutions. The globalization of distant learning offers various options for nations to achieve their goals for their entire educational systems. The demand for ongoing skill improvement and retraining, as well as technical advancements, has sparked a surge in interest in distance learning.

 

In recent years, the literature and studies surrounding distant learning via online education have grown significantly. Studies have looked into a variety of topics related to distant learning, including its pedagogy, technologies, and methodologies, as well as the attitudes and perceptions of students and academics. In order to enhance the environment for distance learning, Permalla et al. (2011) conducted a case study on the efficiency of an online course and the incorporation of web apps. In order to satisfy the expectations of registered students, Cinar and Torenli (2010) concentrated on redesigning the online courses. Isik et al. (2010) evaluated the views of postgraduate students regarding web-based distant learning and found that these students had a generally favourable opinion toward this type of education. Additionally, Karakoyum and Kavak (2009) outlined academicians' perspectives on distance learning.

 

A study on students' perceptions of the helpful and problematic aspects of distant learning was published in 2004 by Song et al. Beyth-Marom et al. (2003) examined variables that might influence students' decisions between Internet-assisted and conventional distant learning. Theoretical, methodological, and practical ramifications were all examined.

 

Advantages of Open Distance Learning Via Online Learning:

The advantage of online learning is that it may give students affordable access to a top-notch education. In general, online education is able to accomplish this because it allows teachers to quickly convey knowledge to students without any constraints. However, the cost of learning is higher than it is in traditional face-to-face education because there are more students and less time available. Increased Access: People from different ethnic and geographic backgrounds can benefit from educational opportunities that might otherwise be limited or unattainable thanks to online learning. By eliminating barriers like distance, a lack of physical infrastructure, and time constraints, it makes education more accessible to a larger population. Some other opportunities are as follow:

 

Flexible Learning Environment: Online learning offers a flexible learning environment where students can learn at their own pace and convenience. They have the freedom to choose when and where to study, allowing for better work-life-study balance and catering to individual learning styles and preferences. Cost-Effective: Open distance learning via online platforms often eliminates the need for physical infrastructure, reducing costs associated with classroom facilities, transportation, and study materials. This cost-effectiveness makes education more affordable and accessible, particularly for economically disadvantaged individuals. Self-Paced Learning: Online learning allows students to progress through the course materials at their own pace. This flexibility accommodates different learning speeds and ensures that students have a thorough understanding of the content before moving on, enhancing learning outcomes.

 

Interactive and Engaging Resources: Multimedia materials including movies, interactive simulations, and virtual labs are available on online learning platforms and can improve student engagement and comprehension. By accommodating various learning styles, these tools can enhance learning by making it more dynamic and participatory. Other benefits of open distance learning through online learning include reducing age disparities, expanding educational access geographically, presenting instruction to wide audiences, providing the opportunity to combine education with employment or family obligations, etc.

 

While open distance learning via online education has many benefits, there are a number of drawbacks that institutions and students should be aware of before beginning any open distance learning programme. Online education involves preparation for distance study. In order to complete tasks on time, distance learning participants—both instructors and students—will occasionally need to make sacrifices. Despite being cost-effective, distance learning may have additional expenses (for example, extra shipping and handling costs). Open distance education does not provide instant feedback. In a conventional classroom, questions and informal assessment can be used to determine a student's performance right away. In remote learning, a student must wait until the instructor has reviewed and commented on his or her work before receiving feedback. Distance learning requires a disproportionate amount of work from teachers compared to standard course delivery techniques. Specifically, there is a significant amount of time spent on preparation and assistance for the students while teaching distance learning courses, in addition to the time needed for the actual delivery of course contents. Additionally, e-mail correspondence time is quite important.

 

Not every degree programme offers all of the essential curriculum online for distance learning through online education. In fact, some degree programmes require physical attendance in the classroom to be completed. Although most employers do, open distance learning via online education degrees may not be recognised by all of them. After graduation, students who plan to work for a certain company should confirm what that company thinks about online education. Students cannot practise their spoken communication abilities with open-distance learning through online education. Open-distance learning students do not have the opportunity to practise spoken communication with instructors and fellow students. Social isolation is another drawback of online education. Open-distance, students could feel alone or miss out on the social and physical interaction that comes with being in a traditional classroom. However, a lot of participants in remote learning studies have indicated that using communication tools like chat rooms, email, video conferencing, bulletin boards, and threaded conversations has helped to lessen this feeling of isolation.

 

The focus of online education research is shifting to mobile learning; nevertheless, it is important to keep in mind that mobile online education is merely a subset of e-learning digital content that can be accessed through mobile devices such smartphones, tablets, and laptops that have internet connectivity. However, it must be kept in mind that online learning does not include content that is not mobile- and tablet-optimized. All that is required for online education is a phone, computer, tablet, or other type of equipment that can connect to the Internet.

 

Future Research Directions:

Given that the majority of students at the Delhi University system's Center for Open Learning (SOL) and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) hold cellphones, future research on e-learning in open and distance education should focus on mobile learning, or M-learning. M-learning can reduce the cost of the infrastructure that students need, unlike e-learning systems, which aren't necessarily appropriate for mobile platforms. Students will be able to learn on the go with greater flexibility as education becomes more mobile. The delivery of information was discussed more so than evaluation and feedback in the context of e-learning. Thanks to e-assessment, the total cost of educating students will go down in the future.

 

RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION:

Students in India will gain from online learning, which will also support their multi-cognitive learning engagement. Long-term costs will also be lower as a result. We urge the government to provide full funding for infrastructure, teacher preparation, bandwidth, and the necessary conversion of paper-based learning objects and content to digital objects and content for the Online Learning for the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Center for Open Learning (SOL) at Delhi University. To guarantee that the best practises are included in the implementation, it is advised that specialists in online learning pedagogy be consulted.
